Sahitya Akademi has many strategies of reaching out to smaller cities and interior villages of India, the chief of them being book exhibitions. Every year we directly organise about thirty exhibitions of our publications and also take part in exhibitions organised by other agencies. These agencies are spread all over India and are well-received by the reading public. Some of the big national exhibitions we take part in are Patna Book Fair in Bihar, Calcutta Book Fair in West Bengal, Lucknow Book Fair in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi Book Fair. Our books are also exhibited in international book fairs like Sri Lankan Book Fair, London Book Fair and Frankfurt Book Fair. Besides we hold an Annual Book Exhibition in Delhi in January every year. We also exhibit our books during our Seminars, especially those related to the themes. We are also invited by colleges to exhibit our books in their premises. These exhibitions not only contribute to our annual turnover, but are opportunities for interaction among the publisher, the writer and the reader. We organise special

programmes during these exhibitions where authors are called upon to engage themselves in a dialogue with their readers. The National Book Week and the World Book Day are occasions for us to celebrate the book through special exhibitions, seminars and symposia on 'My Books of the Century', 'Is the Author Dying?', 'Books and the Electronic Media', 'The Vanishing Reader', 'Why do I Write' and other topics of interest and concern.
At present the Akademi is striving to expand its book-promotion activity by opening new sales counters,
strengthening its public relations and holding more exhibitions, especially in remote areas where readers have little access to good books. This is part of our battle against the steady erosion of good taste and the decay of sensibility caused by the spread of pulp fiction, crime thrillers, television soaps, formula films and other transcient yet pernicious products of the culture industry.

Sahitya Akademi also organises book releases from time to time. Books of a very special nature are alone released during these functions. Anthologies like Modern Indian Literature and Medieval Indian Literature, the Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature, the selections from Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz, a selection from contemporary Burmese stories and Chengiz Aituretou's futuristic Russian novel Ttavo Cassandry and three novels of the Siberian writer Valentine Rasputin, all in Hindi translation and a selection from Jibanananda Das' Bengali poems in English translation 'A Certain Sense', are some of the books thus released in recent years. Releases have been done by the successive Presidents, Vice-Presidents and Prime Ministers of India who have generally been book lovers,go up and by eminent writers and scholars. These functions acquaint the readers with the contents of the book and also with our publication schemes in general.
