3 January 2005 Five Decades (A Short History of Sahitya Akademi : 1954 – 2004) released. The Hon’ble President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, formally received the first copy of this prestigious publication from the hands of Professor Gopi Chand Narang, President of the Akademi. President, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who had earlier read the book, called it “a beautiful book … an important contribution … a brilliant historical study … great history of Sahitya Akademi’s five decades …” Earlier the Akademi President, Professor Gopi Chand Narang introduced the book as “a critical history … a prestigious publication … an objective and balanced evaluation of the work done by the Akademi …” The short but dignified function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan was attended by eminent writers and personalities among whom were Sri I. K. Gujral, former Prime Minister, Smt. Sheela Gujral, Dr. Giriraj Kishore, Professor Indra Nath Choudhuri, Sri K. Jayakumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Smt. Padma Sachdev, Sri Karanjit Singh and Professor K. Satchidanandan, Secretary of the Akademi. Dr. D. S. Rao, the author of the book, was also present on the occasion. The book is a short history of the Sahitya Akademi spanning 50 years and marks the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Akademi. While the different chapters detail the growth of the Akademi over the decades, the Appendices carry its Constitution, names of Officers, Members, Award-winners and Fellows. The book also carries historic photographs taken during the inauguration and various activities of the institution as also facsimiles of rare letters and documents from the Akademi Archives. The well-produced book is expected to generate a lot of interest among writers, scholars and journalists as an objective assessment of the Akademi’s role in promoting Indian literature. New Delhi

21 December 2004 A function to release the Sahitya Akademi Golden Jubilee Commemorative Stamp was held. Dr. Shakeel Ahmad, Hon’ble Minister of State for Communications and IT, released the Stamp while Sri S. Jaipal Reddy, Hon’ble Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Culture, received the Stamp. Professor Gopi Chand Narang, President, Sahitya Akademi, presided and Professor K. Satchidanandan, Secretary, welcomed the gathering. Sri Sunil Gangopadhyay, Vice-President, Sahitya Akademi offered a vote of thanks. The function was followed by an Odissi Recital by the eminent dancer Sharon Lowen. New Delhi

1 November 2004 A programme was held to inaugurate the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Akademi. Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, inaugurated the celebrations and presented the Akademi Fellowships to newly elected Fellows, namely Sri Vijay Dan Detha, Sri Bh. Krishnamurti, Professor U.R. Anantha Murthy, Smt. Amrita Pritam and Sri Sankha Ghosh, and Honorary Fellowship to Professor E.P. Chelyshev and felicitated the existing fellows. He also gave away the Golden Jubilee Life Time Achievement Award to Sri Namdeo Dhasal and the Young Writers’ Awards to Smt. Mandakranta Sen, Sri Ranjit Hoskote, Ms. Neelakshi Singh, Sri Abdul Rasheed and Ms. S. Sithara. Dr. S. Jaipal Reddy was the guest of honour. Professor Gopi Chand Narang, President, Sahitya Akademi, welcomed the gathering and gave the presidential address. Professor K. Satchidanandan, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, proposed a vote of thanks. The presentation ceremony was preceded by an invocation by Sri Madhup Mudgal and followed by screening of excerpts of a film on the Akademi directed by Gulzar. Later in the evening, the famous ghazal singer, Sri Jagjit Singh, gave a concert at Kamani auditorium. New Delhi

19 July 2004 Video films on Mahasveta Devi, Bhisham Sahani and Vinda Karandikar, produced by the Akademi, were screened as a part of week long literary celebration ‘Lokotsava'. Mumbai
9 April 2004 Mushaira Jashn-e-Bahar programme was held as part of Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Akademi. Najma Heptullah was the chief guest. Gopi Chand Narang, President, Sahitya Akademi, presided over the function. Poets form India, Pakistan, China and Gulf countries participated. New Delhi
