   Sahitya Akademi is housed in the Rabindra Bhawan which was built in 1961 to commemorate the birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore.

     The Constitution
  
The Sahitya Akademi was established under a Government of India Resolution dated 15 December 1952 in which the Constitution of the Akademi was originally embodied. The Akademi functions as an autonomous organisation, and the power to amend its Constitution vests in the General Council of the Akademi. This power has been exercised from time to time.
     General Council
  
The supreme authority of the Akademi vests with the General Council which consists of 97 members and the Executive Board which consists of 25 members. The present Genenral Council, the eleventh since the inaguration of the Akademi, had its first session in February 2003. The General Council was reconstituted for the term 2003-2007 and Prof. Gopi Chand Narang was elected as President of the Sahitya Akademi. The general go uppolicy of the Sahitya Akademi and the basic principles of programme are laid down by the General Council & the Executive Board.

  There is an Advisory Board for each language consisting of eminent writers and scholars on whose advice the specific programme in the language concerned is formulated and implemented.
  
The tenure of the General Council is five years. It elects the President, the Vice-President, the members of the Executive Board representing languages, and one representative of the General Council on the Finance Committee of the Sahitya Akademi. Advisory Boards for various languages are appointed by the Executive Board. The Secretary, is the principal executive officer of the Akademi.

 Agrahara Krishna Murthy

Secretary of the Sahitya Akademi

Born on 18th January 1953 in Village Agrahara, Tumkur, Karnataka, Agrahara Krishna Murthy did his B.A. and M.A. from Bangalore University and P.G. Diploma in Tamil from Banaras Hindu University. Though his mother tongue is Telugu, which he can read and speak, he writes in Kannada and English. Besides these languages, he can speak and read Hindi.

Some of his important publications include one novel Neeru Mattu Preeti (2001) which was earlier serialized in Lankesh Patrike in 1985, one collection of poems, Dhyana (2006), Beldingalappana Pooje (Folklore Studies 1976, 1998), Bahuvachana (writings on literature and culture, 2006), Samskriti Kathana (Ed. Critical Essays of the late D.R. Nagaraj, 2 eds. Aug.2002, Nov.2002), Dara Shikuh (translation of Majma-ul-Bahrain, biography) etc. Edited 110 books in different genres in the Kuvempu Centenary Series for C.V.G. Publications, Bangalore along with three other scholars and released all the 110 books at a time in December 2004. He has translated into Kannada, several short stories from Malayalam, Tamil and Urdu. Over the last three decades, he has published numerous essays and critical articles on language, literature, culture etc., in newspapers, magazines and other journals. As a freelance journalist, he has been active as a columnist in Udayavani, Kannada Daily and Lankesh Patrike, Kannada Weekly and as Editor, Kannada Nudi, a monthly published by Kannada Sahitya Parishad, Bangalore and as Contributing Editor, Prajavani, Book Reviews. Krishna Murthy, as a student, organized a poets' meet 'Kavana' wherein eminent poets like Gopalakrishna Adiga, K.S. Narasimha Swamy, P. Lankesh and others participated and appreciated the efforts. He was actively involved in 'Boosa' (1973) and 'Bandaya' (1978) literary movements.

Krishna Murthy has done significant field research in the cultural sphere. He collected a folk epic Junjappana Kavya with Prof. Kalegowda Nagawara (1976), and undertaken extensive field work in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and Karnataka, for his project on "Folk Narratives and Rituals" between 1977 to 1980.

Recipient of Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award for Neeru Mattu Preeti as the best novel of the year 2001, Kempegowda Award for literature-2004 from Bangalore Metropolitan Corporation.

Krishna Murthy has visited Sweden, France, United Kingdom, Japan and Germany. Was Delegate and Co-ordinator of Indian Writers' Delegation to Sweden in 1997. Participated in a number of Seminars, discussions, Reading Sessions and in the International Book Fair, Guttenberg.
