  Sahitya Akademi being the chief meeting place of Indian languages and literatures has a unique library used by lay readers and researchers alike. It is easily the best Library photocollection of books of and on Indian literature in the country. Updated at frequent intervals, the library responds to the needs of the times by reflecting all the creative and critical trends in Indian timingsliterature. Its section on Literary Theory however goes beyond the country to include the latestgo up books on feminism, post-colonial and post-structuralist literary theories. It also provides sufficient background material to Photostatthe researchers with books on Indian and world history, anthropology, population studies, ethnography, archeology, culture and arts.Library photo
  
The library at New Delhi has books in the twenty two languages recognised by the Akademi as well as in some other Indian and foreign languages. Books in Indian languages include

At present, the library has about 1.1 lakhs of titles and is a chief reference library used by researchers. It has brought out several volumes of the Indian Literary Index in order to provide access to In Progressperiodicals and newspaper articles published on Indian literature, on the basis of the library's periodical receipts.
  
Small reference libraries have also been set up in the three Regional Offices of Sahitya Akademi at Mumbai, Calcutta and Bangalore and books are being added to their collection regularly. These libraries Membershipconcentrate on the literatures of go upthe region while they also have a general reference section.

Rules of Admission and Membership



The library is open from 9.30 am to 6.00 pm from Monday to Saturday except Sunday & Gazetted Holidays.


Facilities

1. Card catalogues are available for all the sections. The catalogues are in Roman script.
2. OPAC facility is available for the English and Hindi sections.
3. Reading room facility for consulting the library’s resources.
4. Photocopying facility.
5. Access to DELNET union catalogue.


Membership

Admission and membership rules

1. The library is open only to registered members.
2. The library allows only individual membership.
3. Membership is given upon payment of a refundable security deposit.
4. Persons seeking membership may collect the requisite form available at the circulation counter and submit the same duly filled along with a passport size photograph.
5. For student members up to M.Phil. level, the forms should be attested by Heads of Departments. For others the forms may be attested by gazetted officers, notaries public etc.
6. Address, telephone numbers and stamp impression must be legible. Otherwise the forms will not be accepted.
7. Membership enrolment is done on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
8. Membership is open to persons residing in the National Capital Area. Postal membership is not available.
9. Change of address and telephone number should be informed without fail.

Details of Security Deposit

1. To borrow books from any of the language sections of the library, including English, a deposit of Rs.800 should be made.
2. To borrow from the Indian languages sections, a deposit of Rs.500 should be made.
3. Students in the P.G. and M. Phil. levels are charged a concessional rate of Rs.500 provided their forms are attested by their Heads of Departments.
4. Persons retired from service have also to pay Rs.500 as security deposit.
5. For consultation of the library’s resources without book borrowal facility, a security deposit of Rs.200 has to be given.
6. Payment is to be made in cash.
7. For refund of security deposit the requisite form should be duly filled up and submitted along with cash receipt.

Temporary Admission

For consulting the library for a period up to one month Rs.50 will have to be paid. Books will not issued to such users.


Issuing Books

1. Reference books, costly books, rare books and books printed before 1970 will not be available for borrowal.
2. Only two books are issued per individual.
3. Books are issued for one month. They will be renewed if there is no demand for them from other members.
4. If books are not returned on the date due, a fine of Re. 1 will be charged per day per book.
5. If books are retained for two months or more, without renewal, a fine of Rs.50 will be charged to continue the membership. This is in addition to the late fine.
6. Books will be issued only till 5.30 p.m.

Book Loss and Spoiled Books

Readers should replace books if they are lost by them or spoiled.
Cash reimbursements for loss or unacceptable damage are to be made per rates mentioned below:

Pfotostat

1. Completebooks will be copied only in exceptional cases. Readers are not to make such demands.
2. Only 10% of the total number of pages of a book may be copied.
3. Photocopying will be done up to 5:30 PM.

Photocopying Charges
1. Rs. 1 per exposure, A4 and FS sizes
2. Rs. 2 for A3 size; Rs. 3 for illustrations

Charges for computer printouts
Rs. 3 per page

General Rules

1. Library users should ensure that the resources of the library are properly used and its dignity and environment properly maintained.
2. Readers should not misuse books. Underscoring in the text and scribbling of personal comments inside books are not permitted.
3. Discussions in the stack area and reading room are disallowed.
4. The reading room is meant only for reading. It is not a meeting point or a relaxing or sleeping room. Persons found to be misusing the reading room will be turned out.
5. Readers should not pile up books on the reading tables.
6. Cell phones are not to be used in the library. They should be switched off.


Visitors

A minimum of 150 users visit the library on any given working day, making it one of the most populated libraries in the region.


In Progress

Indexing of all Indian periodicals received in Sahitya Akademi from 1988 onwards is currently being undertaken.
