Presentation of Bhasha Samman and Translation Prizes

Writers and Scholars awarded Sahitya Akademi Bhasha Samman

Background

Sahitya Akademi has been receiving requests and is constantly under pressure for rcognition of new languages. As has been noted a number of times, formal recognition is a difficult task because it entails men and material resources commensurate with the 24 languages (Bodo and Santhali added recently) already recognised. At the same time it is necessary that the languages not formally recognised should be supported without linking such support to official recognition. The Akademi has, therefore, set up a Language Development Board to advise the Akademi in this regard

The Akademi also gives special awards called Bhasha Samman to writers/scholars for significant contribution to the languages not formally recognised by the Akademi, as also to classical and medieval literature. It also has a system of electing Fellows and Honorary Fellows, as also offering Anand Coomarswamy and Premchand Fellowships.go up

The Samman carries a plaque alongwith an amount equal to its awards for creative literature i.e. Rs.50,000/-.
